Houston Bars Join Weekend’s Statewide Protest

Over 300 bars across Texas will be staging a statewide protest to the growing consequences of the Governor’s coronavirus shutdown.
The media is invited to see the expanding revolt in person at these Houston area bars– the Alamo Bar & Grill in partnership with Tik’s Tavern of Houston, Chuters Bar & Saloon in Pasadena, and Down On Main Street Saloon in Baytown. Bars will open at 6 pm, tomorrow, Saturday, July 25, 2020 in solidarity for the first Freedom Fest.
The Freedom Fest protest, organized by a Fort Worth bar owner, is an ongoing event with plans to repeat every weekend until the mandate against bars is lifted. The owners of Chuters Bar in Pasadena made headlines for their own rally and protest against the Governor’s orders earlier this month. This is just the latest event in a series of protests defying the Governor’s mandate and demanding bars be allowed to reopen before many are forced to close forever. Thousands of jobs are at stake.
Greg Truitt, owner of Tik’s Tavern had a few words to share with Governor Abbott. “We need your attention, we need you to get us back open because we’re going broke,” said the local bar owner. “Give us a fighting chance.”
Since June 26 bars in Texas have been shutdown by the Governor in hopes of slowing the spread of the coronavirus, with no definite ending in sight. The first bar shutdown on March 16 forced venues to close for 67 days before they were allowed to reopen for just over a month before being forced to shut down again. As of today, the second shutdown has pushed that number to 95. Governor Abbott has received multiple lawsuits in response to the mandate from bar owners. A temporary restraining order denied Wednesday afternoon was filed by The Texas Bar and Nightclub Alliance in U.S. district court against Governor Abbott to allow bars to reopen.

Freedom Fest will benefit the charity of each bar’s choice, allowing bars to do some good while demanding justice and freedom from the state’s oppressive mandate. Rules for the event include limiting capacity at each venue to 25%, and entry is $10 at the door. The Alamo Bar & Grill is located at 7846 Fallbrook Dr, Houston, Texas. The event hosted in collaboration with Tik’s Tavern will benefit Paw Huggers Animal Rescue. Chuters Bar & Saloon is located at 7337 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas and their event will benefit Bridge Over Troubled Waters Homeless Shelter. Down On Main Street Saloon located at 4911 North Main Street, Baytown, Texas will donate proceeds to the Ronald McDonald House.
